At Plaza de la Fé Juan Pablo II, the pope gives his blessing from a white obelisk in the middle of an empty concrete lot. In 1996, on his second trip to the country (he had also visited in 1983), Pope John Paul II stood in the same plaza and addressed the Nicaraguan people. You can find more monuments commemorating his visit at Catholic churches around the countryside, particularly in Jinotepe and Niquinohomo. Plaza de la Fé Juan Pablo II is now mainly used as a parking area when infrequent events are held at the Concha Acustica. During the day, the empty plaza is also patrolled by a couple of friendly guards.
