Plaza de la República

Directly across from the Catedral Vieja is the Plaza de la República, also known as José Dolores Estrada Park. The shady square has a massive gazebo (the dragon head fountains are impressive even if the water has dried up), but the greatest emphasis is reserved for a memorial to Sandinista commander Carlos Fonseca Amador. “Nicaragua entera te dice presente” declares the inscription, which is surrounded by an empty pool, banners in both national and Sandinista colors and a (somewhat surprisingly) still burning eternal flame. The park is where hopeful vendors wait for tourists, so don’t be surprised if a couple of children approach you with their palm frond masterpieces.
