It’s hard to think of a better way to celebrate the life of Nicaragua’s most famous and beloved poet than with a national theater. For the past 40 years, Teatro Nacional Rubén DarÃo has been the place to see the créme of Nicaragua's cultural events, such as readings of El Gúegúense o Mucho Ratón, the earliest known poem in the country. The theater’s program is eclectic, from evenings with the national orchestra or Nicaragua’s folklore ballet company to spectaculars with Las Vegas musicians. In 2009, the theater hosted the Miss Nicaragua competition. The Rubén DarÃo is a beautiful theater, with a pillared entrance and chandeliers, and is the perfect place to head for an upscale evening. You can check ahead on the theater’s website for dates and times of the performances. Since most events take place at night when the historic district is deserted, plan on either driving to the theater or taking a taxi. Note: the theater is closed to visitors if a performance is planned for the same evening.
