Nicaraguan Guest House (also known to taxi drivers as “backpacker's”) is one of the few hotels in Managua that you can book online. The hotel has clean, if austere, rooms with large bathrooms and is within walking distance (through the leafy neighborhood) of Centro Comercial Las Americas, a mall with a food court and movie theater. Each room has a fan, television and air conditioning unit (although the last costs USD$35 to use). While the guest house is secure and has a friendly staff, the owners have oddly strict rules. Bello Horizonte's bars might be just down the road, but the hotel is only open between the hours of 4:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. -- the latter being both a guest curfew and time in which the electricity is shut off in the hotel (but not in the rooms). Signs over the toilets note that sexual tourism is prohibited; sets of guest rules are taped to almost every wall. Combine the curfew with a 10 a.m. checkout time, a bowl of fruit and cracker packet for breakfast, and location that airport taxis don't want to go to and Nicaragua Guest House becomes the place to book if you want a secure night before moving on to a better location.
Nicaragua Guest House is a family owned and operated guest in a quiet Managua suberb. Catering to backpackers, the price is right – especially considering that the Nicaragua Guest House offers almost all the same services as its more expensive competitors. It’s also a quieter option than the other more rowdy backpacker haunts in Managua. They are just a short cab ride from the airport and bus terminals.

I along with my 3 teenagers stayed at the accomodations of Oscar Fonseca for approximately 7 different days during our 20 day visit to Nicaragua from December 17 - January 7, 2004. The accomodations were clean, quiet, and centrally located within walking distance to a variety of restaurants and stores. The Huembris market is also within a $1.00 taxi cab ride from Oscar's. I highly recommend a consideration of this property if you are visiting Managua. During our initial stay in Managua, our family of four encountered multiple problems with lost luggage, damaged goods, etc. Oscar spent substantial time traveling back and forth between his guest home and the airport assisting me in obtaining my luggage. His wife is an excellent cook, and his son Martin is very helpful and friendly. Also, Oscar is able to communicate in English. Mark Rice mrice@games2remember.com
