Managua is where many offices of multinational corporations and factories are located; foreign investment has allowed for newer buildings to be constructed throughout the city. However, it’s the city’s mercados (markets) that see the most commercial action. Hundreds of thousands of merchants sell food and wares here, the most extensive being the Mercado Oriental, which is the largest in Central America. Unfortunately, the Mercado Oriental suffered some damage in 2008, when a fire ripped through the market and destroyed over twelve acres of stall space. But vendors have slowly been rebuilding since then.
