You may notice a road sign for Centro Ecoturistico La Máquina (also spelled La Mákina) as you’re barreling down the new highway between La Boquita/Casares and Diriamba. The main draw of the private reserve is access to the tiny Rio La Trinidad with its series of lovely little waterfalls. Above the water, tiers of balconies and mini-rancheros for provide plenty of shady spots for picnickers. La Máquina (505-8-901-1989; C$30; open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) is designed on levels so that you can take a dip in the deep green pool of water created by small dam, hop in one of the waterfall pools or make your way down slippery stone stairs to the shallow stream below the cascades.
There are a few short trails scattered around the 154-hectare reserve and, in spring 2009, workers were clearing out strips of dry tropical forest to provide more space for wandering. The river bank provides a nice place for an easy hike; plenty of tadpoles, dragonflies and schools of fish make the Rio La Trinidad their home. Near the parking area, you can also see what happens when a ficus grows to monster proportions.
La Máquina has two eateries (a small grill beside the river and a large patio at the top of the embankment) although the riverside half only opens on weekends and holidays. The patio restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and serves consumes, seafood and meat dishes for between C$60 and C$250.
The private reserve charges $5 per night for camping (including breakfast), although make sure to call two days ahead of time to let them know you’re coming.
Buses pass every 50 minutes between 6 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. on their way between Diriamba and La Boquita/Casares.
