While it may seem that every town in the Masaya area is working on a tourism-related project, the related tour guide industry has yet to catch up. In these areas, local guides are still your best bet. Mototaxi drivers can often serve as the best informal guides; not only do they have a form of transportation, they also usually know their local area well, although they probably won’t know a lot in the way of historical context. In Los Pueblos Blancos, alcaldias and town libraries can also provide information. In Masaya and Jinotepe, check in with the local INTUR office for advice on where to go and how to get there; at Laguna de Apoyo ask at Eco Hotel Apoyo, Crater’s Edge or Monkey Hut about hiring a guide for a day trip. At Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya, park rangers are usually friendly and willing to provide either basic information or specific tours.
