The Museo GalerÃa Héroes y Martires, located just inside one of the main entrances to the Alcaldia de Masaya, is an unabashed tribute to the Sandinistas and their fight against Somoza’s national guard. The 400 photographs and personal objects on display make the exhibits some of the most poignant and memorable in Nicaragua. Glass cases of rifles, mock bombs and a gas can used in an attack are interspersed with rebels’ personal items: a watch, a social security card, a beret with Enrique written on the brim in magic marker. In the back, partitions have been labeled with the date and place of important battles and then covered with photos of the Sandinistas who died. Most of the fallen look to be in their teens and some of the portraits are obviously school photos. The museum also has various newspaper articles and several copies of professional photos. The Museo GalerÃa Héroes y Martires provides an intimate glimpse into Nicaragua’s past that you shouldn’t miss. The museum is open from 8 to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays. Visitors are asked for a voluntary contribution.
