Lodging options in Nicaragua can be a little limited by western standards, even in comparison to other Central American countries. However tourism is becoming an increasingly important industry and the range and coverage of quality accommodation is increasing rapidly.
Luxury hotels and quality accommodations are available in all the major cities and tourist hot-spots, but if you stray from these popular areas finding high-end lodging becomes more of a challenge.
At the other end of the scale, Nicaragua has a wide range of budget options with many small bed and breakfasts, guest houses and a growing network of hostels. Although it is often easy to find extremely cheap accommodation, there is a great variety in the quality—so shop around and make sure you ask to see your room before you commit.
Note that often paying as little as a dollar extra can have a huge effect on the quality of your lodgings. Such a small amount might mean the difference between a sweltering room and an air conditioned one, for example.
Outside of the cities, ecotourism is slowly developing and the countryside now is dotted with jungle lodges and excellent hacienda-style accommodations, many of which are based around coffee plantations or fincas. For the more adventurous, camping is also an option.
No matter where you decide to lay your head, make sure to keep a close watch on any valuables. Don’t leave any expensive items in an unlocked room or unsecure space and make sure you think twice about leaving cash or personal items with the staff of any establishment.
Also be aware of any place that advertises itself as a “motel” or as “open 24 hours”, in many cases these establishments may be love hotels that charge by the hour.
