Eco-Tourism in Nicaragua

Soon to surpass Costa Rica as the number one destination for ecotourism, Nicaragua is home to an impressive twenty-five volcanoes; holds 7 percent of the world´s biodiversity; boasts the largest rainforest and fresh water lake in Central America, as well as white sand beaches on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Tourism in Nicaragua has suffered from a bad reputation due to years of political instability, which means the tourist volume is often quite low making this an ideal destination to enjoy the outdoors as well as unusual animal and plant species uninterrupted. Home to 76 protected land areas, eco-tours in Nicaragua can take you to a number of different and unique natural areas. There are numerous packages available at a variety of prices to meet every traveler’s needs. Please remember to research your tour operators before buying to make sure you are getting a real and honest eco-tour that emphasizes its impact on the environment. All tour operators should follow the International Ecotourism Society's definition of eco-tourism: responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people. Planned eco-tours are likely to visit the Los Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge, Solentiname Archipelago, Montibelli Wildlife Reserve, El Chocoyero Nature Reserve, Masaya Volcano National Park or the Indo-Maíz Biological Reserve. The low tourist demand drives down the prices for many tours in Nicaragua making this both a beautiful and inexpensive way to enjoy what this Central American country has to offer.
