Although there are not many domestic airline routes in Nicaragua, flying can dramatically reduce your travel time, especially if you intend on heading to the Corn Islands or anywhere on the Caribbean Coast. Air travel is a convenient and affordable way to access these areas of tropical beauty, which normally would take over a day and a half to get to overland.
The company La Costeña operates internal flights within Nicaragua (Atlantic Airlines has suspended operations). Most of these domestic routes originate or terminate at Managua International Airport, where the two domestic airlines are housed in offices just to the west of the international terminal.
As the planes used on these domestic routes are very small it is always worth booking as early as possible. Some flights fill up quickly, and showing up early to confirm is always a good idea, since there is a chance you may find that your seat has been given away. It is also advisable to keep all vital items on your person as due to weight restrictions some baggage may get left behind.
Note that Nicaragua has a hefty domestic departure tax of $2… This fee is payable at the airport in either dollars or córdobas.
