Introduction to Nicaragua - Tourist Information. Nicaragua

Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America and least densely populated, boasts 25 volcanoes and miles of coasts on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

There are 76 protected land areas created with over 700 species of birds, 176 types of mammals and over 15,000 kinds of flowering plants. Over 40 percent of the country is covered with jungle, making Nicaragua an ideal location for nature lovers, outdoor aficionados and adventure travelers.

Due to years of political instability, economic problems and social turmoil, the tourism infrastructure in Nicaragua is just starting to flourish -- making the country one of Central Americas best kept secrets and the newest hot spot for surfing, diving and hiking. (Now that Costa Rica has become more touristy and expensive, more extreme sport enthusiasts are heading to Nicaragua).

Currently, Nicaragua has the reputation for being the safest and cheapest country to travel through in Central America. Be sure to take advantage of this up and coming destination before it becomes part of the beaten path.
