Nicaraguan history has been pitted with crises -- United States intervention, The Contra War, Somoza dictatorships and economic despair -- which have left the country scarred with landmines and dealing with an inflated economy. Yet, for a history so marred in brutality and foreign military intervention, Nicaraguans have managed to remain relatively unscathed. Nicaraguans welcom American tourists and have voted left-winged Daniel Ortega, leader of the Sandinista party, back into the presidency. After years of violence, Nicaragua is now one of the safest countries for travelers in Latin America.
