Responsible Tourism in Nicaragua

Phrases like eco-tourism, green tourism and sustainable tourism are often used by tour operators and travel agencies to advertise certain services. Responsible tourism is the newest global trend that aims at helping travelers have a smaller negative effect on the environment and a greater positive impact on the local people and infrastructure. Responsible Tourism is tourism that creates better places for people to live in, and better places to visit, as defined by the 2002 Cape Town Declaration on Responsible Tourism. Here are a few helpful tips for the average traveler looking to engage in responsible tourism: The first step is to learn about the country and its culture. Be aware of the social and religious norms of the local people and be respectful of their wishes for privacy by asking permission before taking photos. The second step is to minimize your environmental impact by putting trash and recyclable items in their proper place and reusing water bottles and bags as much as possible. The next step is to support the regional economy as much as possible by buying locally made goods, eating locally grown food and staying in locally owned accommodations. The final step is to be conscious of your status as a guest in the country and always remember the golden rule of treating others how you would like to be treated. Make sure that when you travel both you and the people around you are left with the feeling that the visit has been positive experience.
