Senior Travelers in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is rapidly emerging as a destination for snowbirds and retirees, so senior travelers will be in good company. Older travelers are, in ever-increasing numbers, drawn in by Nicaragua’s fine beaches, beautiful landscapes, vibrant artistic traditions and relaxed pace of life. In most of Latin America, including Nicaragua, older people are held in high regard, and seniors should expect to be treated with respect in the country.

Nicaragua, however, is not well set-up for organized touring, so older travelers uncomfortable with driving or using public transportation will have limited mobility or will be faced with expensive inter-city taxi fares. Seniors with major, pre-existing health conditions might want to think twice about visiting, as well; prescription drugs are cheap and easily available over the counter, but medical facilities outside Managua are generally overcrowded, understaffed and under-equipped. Those seniors who do make the trip should invest in good travel medical insurance, since very few regular health insurance plans cover medical expenses in Nicaragua. None of this should deter the adventurous older traveler, however, as most seniors return from Nicaragua raving about their experiences.
