Using Travelers Cheques in Nicaragua

Travelers cheques are almost impossible to exchange anywhere in Nicaragua, making credit cards a much more reliable source of money. If you do decide to bring travelers cheques, do not rely on them as your first source of money, you will be lucky to find anywhere to exchange them.
Banco de America Central (Bancentral) is a good place to try if you have to exchange a travelers cheque. If they do accept your cheque you are unlikely to get a favorable rate and will be changed at least a 3 percent commission.
American Express travelers cheques in dollars are the most likely to be exchanged, although the American Express website (www.aetclocator.com) doesn’t list any locations in Nicaragua where they are guaranteed to be accepted.
NOTE: When using travelers cheques anywhere in the world make sure that you have a record of the serial numbers kept separate from your travelers cheques, possibly in an e-mail account, as you will be asked to provide these if your cheques are lost or stolen.
