Wildlife in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is home to untold numbers of creatures, large and small, who live in the country's various eco-systems. The wildlife in Nicaragua is one of the country’s largest tourist attractions. Each year between July and January, both the Loggerhead and Olive Ridley sea turtles emerge from the sea to lay their eggs on Nicaragua's Pacific beaches. A few months later, thousands of tiny sea turtles emerge from the sand and make their way into the sea. La Flor Wildlife Reserve (located 22 km South of San Juan del Sur) is one of the few places in the world that allows visitors to view the hatching of the sea turtles. Another well known marine species found only in Lake Nicaragua is the bull shark, the only known fresh water shark in the world, which unfortunately is also an endangered species since a profitable shark fin plant killed most of the population during the Somoza regime. Lake Nicaragua is a central point for fish and bird species with more than forty different fish species identified in the lake and as many as 700 species of birds in the great lakes region of Nicaragua. At least 176 species of mammals call Nicaragua home, including: bats, monkeys, puma, cougars, jaguarondis, margays and ocelots. There are also three-toed sloths, tamandua anteaters and armadillos. Besides being home to a wide variety of mammals, Nicaragua also boasts an impressive 250,000 species of insects. With many areas of the rainforest still undiscovered, new species of insects are frequently being added to the already numerous, known species of butterflies, moths, spiders and ants.
