Women Travelers in Nicaragua

Besides the usual catcalls and whistles by men on the streets, women traveling alone (provided they take the usual safety precautions) should not have any more trouble in Nicaragua then any other part of Central America. Nicaraguan women are subjected to the same air blown kisses and hisses; they seem to take the attention in stride and generally ignore it. Don’t be alarmed by the words of love whispered by Nicaraguan men—that should be as far as it goes since touching unknown women, foreign or local, is frowned upon.

As always, dress for the amount of attention you want. Women traveling alone, or even in a small group, should dress modestly (leave the mini skirt and spaghetti strap tank tops at home). Nude or topless sunbathing is not socially acceptable.

Being one of the poorest countries in Central America, Nicaragua has its far share of petty thefts and robberies (especially in some of the poorer Managua neighborhoods) but the number of physical assaults, murders and rapes is very low, although the United States Embassy does warn that violent crimes are on the rise in Managua.

Avoid walking late at night, drinking at bars alone and carrying either large sums of money or important documents (although be sure to have a photocopy of your passport on you at all times). Above all else, trust your instincts when deciding if a situation is dangerous. If you are cautious and careful, traveling through Nicaragua as single women can prove to be both a rewarding and empowering experience.
