Tiny, isolated Jalapa is home to roughly 20,000 inhabitants, many of whom work in the production of corn, coffee and tobacco. Until recently there were no paved roads connecting the town to the rest of Nicaragua, and its proximity to Contra bases in Honduras made it a target during the conflict in the 80's. Set in a mountainous wilderness, Jalapa is improving its infrastructure (including the recently paved road from Ocotal, a cell phone tower and internet access) and may become a more established destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the future. As of now, there are several undeveloped natural spots for tourists to check out, but these are not easily accessed.
