Jinotega’s mountainous terrain, ecological fincas and coffee co-ops are all good reasons to pay this provincial town a visit. However, the best reason might just be its people. Citizens of Jinotega are friendly and open, and the inquisitive traveler will have plenty of people to talk to. Of particular interest are Don Pilo, a traditional medicine man who makes his trek daily from Cerro La Cruz to sell herbs and powders at the cemetery. For sale, among other things, are cures for stomachaches and insanity, charms for warding off thieves, and herbs to summon back the one who got away. For an animated telling of Jinotega’s history, visit Luis Lantaro Ruiz Mendoza. A self-described writer, documentary film-maker, journalist, musician, actor, natural medicine guru and tour guide, he is a wealth of knowledge and entertainment. He can be visited at the natural medicine shop he co-owns with his wife, but best to check ahead that he is in town. 782-4460, cell phone, 858-8928, goyomiel@yahoo.com.
