Lago de Apanas - Boating Jinotega - Nicaragua

The creation of Lago de Apanas is a feat of engineering which can be attributed to bright minds from Italy, Nicaragua and the rest of the Americas. The Apanas Valley was flooded with waters from the Tuma River, allowing for the creation of the Centroamerica Powerplant which provides 35% of Nicaragua’s hydroelectric power. At the lake you can rent a boat from the fisherman co-op, or you might be able to pay a fisherman to take you out on the water. Bring your fishing pole and binoculars, as this is a prime spot for bird watching. Since there are no hotels or restaurants at the lake, go for the day and bring your own food. At present, property surrounding the lake is being marketed in the hopes of creating a luxury community. Buses from Jinotega leave every half hour from the north terminal and the ride costs roughly 25 cents.
