Reserva Natural Macizos de Peñas Blancas - Hiking Matagalpa - Nicaragua

As it is 73 km from Matagalpa, visits to Peñas Blancas usually last for about three days. Given the lack of infrastructure, the only real way to visit is to go through Matagalpa Tours. A two person, two day, one night tour to Peñas Blancas, La Sombra Eco-lodge and Finca La Canavalia costs $195. A two person, two day, one night tour to Peñas Blancas and the La Pavona waterfall costs $150. Both tours include meals, private transport, entrance fees and a bilingual guide.

At present, lodgings at Peñas Blancas are basic so travelers must be willing to give up some amenities for a few days. The rustic cabins are maintained by a group called Guardianas Del Bosque who can also arrange trekking tours to such waterfalls as Cascada el Arcoiris. Rock climbers will have plenty to do here, but only if they bring their own equipment.

Hikes into Peñas Blancas can also be taken from nearby San Rafael Private Reserve, which also offers good birdwatching.
