In order to get a sense of the roots of the Nicaraguan Communist movement, you might want to visit the childhood home of FSLN founder, Carlos Fonseca. On display are photographs of Fonseca throughout his life, as a child and as the leader of the country’s Sandinista uprising (look carefully to spot current president Daniel Ortega). One photo in particular might surprise you --it is Carlos Fonseca in disguise. Wanted by the Samoza government, Fonseca had to go undercover to visit his mother in Matagalpa. Besides the photographs, the museum features several of Fonseca’s personal belongings including his glasses, an AK-48, a compass and a soiled shirt. While there’s a distinct lack of explanatory captions, the knowledgeable docents will be more than happy to answer your questions.
