Iglesia Catedral San Pedro - Historical Building Matagalpa - Nicaragua

This blindingly white church is easy to spot in the distance, so makes a great reference point for navigating Matagalpa. After those in Granada and Leon, this is the largest cathedral in the country. Given the fact that the city is nestled in the mountains and is far from any ports Matagalpa was an unusual choice of location for such a monumental edifice. Construction began in 1874 and went on for twenty years --an impressive feat considering the church in Leon took a hundred years to build. San Pedro was erected in large part through volunteer labor and with donated money. The church’s doorway is flanked by colorful, life-size statues of the angels Michael and Rafael, and Jesus and various saints are positioned alongside the archway columns. The interior’s most notable feature is a huge, paper mache shrine to the Virgin of Lourdes.

Location:
Just north of Parque Morazan.
