Other Hiking Around Matagalpa - Hiking Matagalpa - Nicaragua

There are several day hikes that can be taken advantage of by a visitor to Matagalpa. Centro Girasol prints maps so intrepid travelers can take on the outdoors solo. A five to seven hour hike to Cerro El Torro, a rock formation resembling a bull, offers picturesque views of the surrounding mountains. Ruta de la Guerra 1978, on which hikers will ascend and descend Cerro Apante, is the same route guerillas used to flee from the national guard. This route takes four to six hours to complete and passes through coffee fields, villages, and forests. Ruta de la Guerra 1979, a four hour hike, follows the path the national guard used when chased out of Matagalpa by guerillas. It takes the hiker through a pottery workshop, valleys, and mountains, finally culminating at a hill from which all of Matagalpa can be seen. Other hikes exist, and you have to pass through the Centro Girasol to obtain additional information. Funds raised from map sales goes to support the organization’s initiatives involving handicapped children.
