Most people come to the northern highlands not to see monumental sights, but to get a sense of the culture. More than any other region, tourism in the highlands goes hand in hand with local industry. More and more farms are becoming open to agro-tourism, and more and more hiking trails are being made accessible. As this is the premier coffee-growing region of the country, many coffee plantations offer tours and as Esteli is known for its cigars, many factories allow visitors. In certain towns, notably Esteli and Matagalpa, there are a few low-budget museums that are worth a wander. Mostly this area is a work in progress, with great potential for the development of tourism and lots of energy and enthusiasm behind the scenes.
