Pueblo Nuevo

606 meters above sea level, This 350 year old town (not so new anymore)is located northwest of Esteli has a population of 24000, only about 4000 of whom live in the urban zone. The town itself is quite small, and the only official attraction is a tiny museum inside the Casa de Cultura featuring pottery and other miscellanea, including a human skeleton, roughly a thousand years old.

The real reason to come to Pueblo Nuevo is to visit its Paleolithic sites, which provide what is considered the oldest evidence of human existence in Central America. These are located at El Bosque, about 11 km outside town. The first discoveries were made by Ruben Olivas in 1973. Finds include the preserved remains of mastodons, ground sloth and miniature horses, among other extinct fauna, the oldest of which date to 32,000 years ago. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funds excavations have not been terribly extensive. It is still possible to visit the sites however, and arrangements can be made either through the mayor’s office or Dona Selina, whose home is located two blocks from the central park. Dona Selina also offers the only sleeping accommodations in town, charging 3 USD per night.

Fiesta Patronales is celebrated 24th of October and honors San Rafael Arcangel.

Regular buses run from Esteli to Pueblo Nuevo. The ride costs 1.75 USD and takes about two hours. If you have your own vehicle you can take the highway from San Juan de Limay. The entrance can be seen on the right hand side.
