22 km from Ocotal on the road to Jalapa is San Fernando, home to over 200 coffee farms where over two million pounds of coffee are produced each year. As of yet, no organized agro-tourism exists here, but an inquisitive visitor might be able to get a glimpse into the coffee production process anyway. There is dispute concerning the light skin and blue eyes of San Fernando’s 7,000 inhabitants. Some believe their origins can be attributed to the North American troops who occupied the area during Sandino’s uprising. Older inhabitants, however, claim these features were present from the time of the Spanish conquest.
