Pico Mogoton - Hiking San Fernando - Nicaragua

Twenty kilometers (12 mi) from San Fernando and directly bordering Honduras is Pico Mogoton. At 2,107 meters (6,913 ft) above sea level, it is the highest peak in Nicaragua and is rarely traversed by tourists. This is likely due to the fact that the volcano is dotted with active landmines, the vestiges of the conflict in the 80’s. On weekdays the military works on detonating these remaining landmines so be ready to hear some explosions. Additionally, during the rainy season dirt roads are often washed away. As such, peak baggers intent on conquering Mogoton should contact local guides and finca owners Bayardo Jimenez and Roberto Castellanos. They can arrange transport directly from Ocotal, 32 km away. The strenuous 4.2 km hike passes through a thickly vegetated cloud forest and the Achuapa riverbed. Although Bayardo and Roberto charge around $60 per person, they know the area well and a cheaper deal could compromise your safety.

Bayardo Jimenez can be reached at (505) 833-1144 or (505) 732-2267 and Roberto Castellanos on his cell phone at (505) 653-3666 or at home at (505)732-0317.
