Population 15,000. 105 km north of Managua. On the crossroads between Matagalpa, Esteli and the south, Sebaco is largest city in the fertile Sebaco Valley, and a commercial hub where Nicaragua’s farmers gather to sell their goods. The strip of highway passing through Sebaco is flanked by stands offering vibrantly colored fruits and veggies from all over the region. A recent agreement between local growers and Vidalia onion growers in Georgia allows Sebaco’s farmers exclusive export to the United States when Vidalias are not in season. McDonald's has even gotten in on the action, now buying Sebaco onions for their onion rings whenever Georgia Vidalias aren't available. All this, along with a partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development aiming to expand Sebaco’s onion growing industry, has given the town the nickname: “La Ciudad de Cebollas (City of Onions).”
After stocking up on roughage, there actually is not a whole lot left to do in town. The Church of Immaculate Concepcion has a small display of pre-Columbian pottery and some displays concerning the town’s history. The church is located a little far off the main drag, so hail down a tuk-tuk (motorized rickshaw) if you want to see it. There are a few restaurants in town, all offering typical Nicaraguan fare, and there are a couple of hospedajes. Visitors are better off staying in nearby Matagalpa or Esteli, however, both of which offer considerably more accommodations and attractions.
