Somoto’s most famous attraction is undoubtedly its canyon, located 15 miles from the town itself. The canyon gained distinction in 2004 when its existence came to the attention of Czech scientists. It has since been designated a national monument and protected area by the Nicaraguan government, and is receiving more and more tourists each year. The mayor’s office has recently renovated the central park area and travelers wanting to spend more time there can occupy themselves visiting rosquilla factories, the public pool (1 USD) or the Casa de Cultura, where concerts and other events are often held. On weekends it’s possible to catch soccer and baseball games at the nearby stadium. Most locals are fervent fans, and even tickets for senior league games sell out quickly. Men staying a while might also want to indulge in a professional shave at the barbershop next to the BDF. For 2.50 USD a gentleman can get an hour long facial massage.
