The tiny, forested Isla de Quiste is a sacred place for locals, since it was on this uninhabited dot of land (the name means “cyst”) that the famous chief Nicarao chose to rest forever (although you’ll find his ornate tomb on the Ometepe mainland). Most tourists visit the island, on the south side of Ometepe, to see the wealth of birds that nest there. You can rent a kayak from Hotel Charco Verde or even swim there - but watch out for those freshwater sharks!
