Volcán Maderas is Ometepe's junior volcano, rising up just 1394 meters, but can offer climbs that are just as challenging as Volcán Concepción. Since Maderas is dormant, most visitors head for the summit.
Like Volcán Concepción, a guide is absolutely essential to scale Madera. The climb is steep and difficult, and you need someone familiar in the area and versed in first aid in the event of an accident. When you hike, remember to wear proper shoes and bring insect repellent, plenty of water and a snack for the summit. The guided hikes take eight to 10 hours; most groups leave early in the morning to escape the worst of the tropical heat.
A hike into the crater will give you a glimpse of the magical Laguna de Volcán Maderas. (You’ll have to hike in to see the lake, since there are few views from the trail.) The laguna’s shores are thick with mud and you may find yourself wading for a short distance befote you can swim in the clear waters. Once incide the crater, you may be able to spot monkeys, snakes and several species of birds. Some locals claim that the area is also inhabited by fairies and supernatural spirits.
