Located on the Pan American highway, Rivas is easily accessible by car. If your eventual destination is a more remote beach location, renting one is highly recommended. There are several options. A regular car goes for about $25 a day. If you’re traveling in a large group, a van for up to 13 people can be rented for a total of $60 a day. During rainy season, it is advisable to invest in a four-by-four.
There are also several buses constantly coming through from Granada and Managua. They depart every 30 minutes, between 5 AM and 3 PM, and cost about two dollars. Both trips take an hour and a half to two hours. Nandaime is a common transfer point between Granada and Rivas. In Rivas, you can connect to buses for San Juan del Sur, San Jorge, Las Peñas Blancas and other bordering towns for an additional dollar. It is important to note that these buses are often very hot and crowded, and it is essential to verbalize your destination. Cabs are always waiting at the station to transport travelers to Ometepe Island and all other beach destinations for between ten and twenty dollars.
