Getting To and Away

Rivas is the main transfer point from Granada, Managua, and other beach locations to San Juan del Sur. Buses run from 5 a.m. to 5p.m. from SJDS to Rivas, every 30 minutes to an hour. There are express buses from SJDS to Managua that depart SJDS at 5 a.m., 5:45 a.m., 7 a.m., and 3:20 p.m. The trip takes about two to three hours. Most bus rides cost $1-3. Big Wave Dave’s also offers shuttles for $25 to Managua and Granada at 7:30 a.m. every morning. Private shuttles to and from the airport can be arranged with most hotels. Private shuttles are available through Paxeos. Look for more information at www.paxeos.com. Taxis pick up at the corner of the market entrance in SJDS. If you’re looking to save some money, ask for one "colectivo," which means you will share with strangers along the way. This should cost about $1.50 to Rivas. Private taxis cost about $7 to Rivas, but can cost up to $60 to Managua.
