When to Visit

For surfers, any time of year is a good time to visit San Juan del Sur. Most prefer the rainy season, because temperatures are cooler and beaches are less crowded. Rainy season is usually from May to November, but hurricanes are more prominent during the months of September, October and November. Because of this, February to August is the preferred time for those interested in sailing or any activity involving boats. Turtles lay eggs from July to February, and many people come to see them hatch. During Christmas and Semana Santa (Easter Week), beaches are very crowded and reservations need to be made in advance. September 14th and 15th is Independence Day in Nicaragua and San Juan del Sur is a popular destination, while less crowded than during Semana Santa, it is still advisable to make a reservation if you’re traveling around this time.
