Boca De Sábalos

(Population 1,270, Altitude 37m)

The village of Boca de Sábalos takes its name from the river running through it.  The river, in turn, is named after the tarpon fish which inhabits its waters. Sitting at the confluence with the Río San Juan, Boca de Sábalos (commonly called Sábalos) was born around 1940 as a large estate with cattle, around which the workers eventually put up houses. Then starting 1979, an Austrian sawmill opened to process the dozens of kinds of woods growing nearby (including cedar, mahogany, laurel, and almond) and more workers came.

Today, the wood industry is a lot more controlled; however, a small village has firmly established itself. Most of the population lives off farming--growing the ever-present rice, beans, tubers, plantains and corn. Cacao is also grown for export for export, as is the African palm, which is used for oil. A few businesses are hoping to attract tourism, offering tours and lodging. This means you can find some decent accommodation and food on the main road, where the few hospedajes are concentrated.

There is not a huge amount to do here, but it makes for a good day visit if  you want is to get off the beaten path and soak up the atmosphere of rural Nicaragua before continuing on to El Castillo. Nearby are a couple of more upscale lodges (by the standards of this remote region) from which to organize tours into the Indio Maiz reserve.  They will also help you organize fishing trips.  It is a great place to cast lines for the massive tarpons which thrive in the heavy-flowing waters of the Río San Juan.
