Just like El Castillo and to a lesser extent San Carlos, Boca de Sábalos can serve as a base for fishing or nature-watching tours on the Río San Juan and into the Indio Maiz reserve. They can be arranged by the three upscale lodges in the vicinity. Otherwise, you can go through one of the town guides, who have set up a small tourist information point right by the pier (it is the wooden green hut behind the statue of the jumping fish). Julio (cel: (505) 8431-2390) is usually the one who meets visitors as they step off the boat, since he speaks good English. Either he or Moyses can set up the following tours. Rates given are quoted as a “first price” and can be bargained down. Tours starting from the river, nature-watching + walk through the fincas ($80/group), caiman night tours ($50/group), drifting in inner tubes down from Santa Rosa (2-3hours, $40/group), fishing tours ($200/group of 1 to 3 persons). The longest tour is a six-day trip to San Juan del Norte by canoe, with a walking tour of Greytown and a motorboat trip up the Río Indio, $250/person (4 to 12 persons), including guide, canoes, accommodation and food. Tours to private fincas like Quebracho ($80/group, 5 to 6 hours), getting to know the birds and trees, while a biologist explains the uses of medicinal herbs. Tours to the Aguas termales: $85/group, 5-7 hours.
