Getting To and Away

Buses run from Managua to San Carlos daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from San Carlos to Managua between 5 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Trips cost around $10.00 and take about 10 hours. The trips on Sundays are less frequent. There are also buses between San Carlos and Granada that leave Granada on Mondays and Thursdays at 3 p.m. and depart from San Carlos on Tuesdays and Fridays at 3 p.m. The cost is $7.00 and the ride takes 11 hours. Ferries run between Granada and San Carlos with the same schedule, stopping in Altagracia on Ometepe Island along the way. One bus per day goes from San Carlos to El Rama at 2:30 p.m. every day except Sunday. The ride takes nine hours and costs $8.00. However, it is important to note that the road between the two towns is not designed for vehicles. Because of this, trips can often be uncomfortable, bumpy and even dangerous.
