Volcán Maderas Hike

Location:
Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua

Hiking, Trekking

By Mike Karanicolas

Volcán Maderas is Ometepe's junior volcano, rising up just 1394 meters. Paradoxically, it's a longer and more difficult climb than Volcán Concepción. This is because Maderas is dormant, so you can ascend right to the summit. In fact, that's generally the point of going up. Cloud cover may obscure the view out, but you can still hike into the crater for a glimpse of the magical Laguna de Volcán Maderas.

Inside, you'll find a rich biodiversity including monkeys, snakes and several species of birds. It's claimed the area is also inhabited by fairies and supernatural spirits. Like Volcán Concepción, a guide is absolutely essential to scale Madera. The climb is steep and difficult, and you need someone familiar in the area and versed in first aid in the event of an accident. Proper shoes, insect repellent, plenty of water and a snack for the summit are also good ideas.

There are two paths that most guides use. One is easier and shorter, but the other has better lookouts. The entire trip up and down should take between 8 and 10 hours depending on which path you choose.
