Plans to reinstate the ferry between Potosi and El Salvador have been on the table for years, but the only sign of progress is a pile of concrete poles along the Potosi beach. Locals are hopeful that the federal government will eventually improve the road to their town, add faster bus services and send boats scuttling between Potosi and El Salvador. But don’t expect an official service any time soon. If you’re desperate to get to El Salvador from Potosi, fisherman can take you there, but will charge up to US$100. Make sure you’re headed for a valid border crossing, to avoid any immigration issues. Tomas Gonzales makes a weekly run in his boat, ferrying workers to El Salvador on Monday and back to Nicaragua on Friday.
