Leon and the surrounding areas have a higher amount of tourism than other parts of Nicaragua, with a corresponding level of petty crime. As in all areas, make sure to keep a close eye on your belongings. Ask in your hotel or hostel about the going rates for services such as tours, taxi rides and artesian goods. Even if the staff can’t tell you the exact prices, they can usually provide a good ballpark figure. Remember – the time to ask about pricing is before you start on a trip or get into a cab, not when you arrive at your destination.
