El Fortín de Acosasco - Historical Building Leon - Nicaragua

El Fortin, a striking symbol of the Sandinista’s triumph over Somoza and his national guard, sits on a hill by the city’s former garbage dump, where the city’s poorest used to scrabble for anything salvageable. This is definitely not a safe place to walk, but taxis will take you to the fort for about USD$5. Built in 1889 on a hill near Sutiava, El Fortín has a gorgeous view of the city below. The building is clean, although somewhat overgrown, with a sunken building of cells and gun turrets around the edges. The fort held Somoza’s political prisoners for decades, right up until July 7, 1979 whenl El Fortín was overrun and the Sandinista captives liberated. July is the best time to visit the prison, for annual celebrations of the Sandinista victory. The July 7 festivities include historical reenactments, a visit by Nicaragua’s president and, of course, fireworks.
