For the past two decades, Jean-Michel Maes and his wife, Juana Téllez R. have been collecting all the many forms of Nicaraguan insect (beautiful blue morphos, armored rhinoceros beetles, scorpions big and small) and inviting visitors to see them. Three years ago, they opened the long-planed Museo Entomológico de León (www.bio-nica.info), the country’s most extensive insect collection. The museum is a surprisingly small space, considering it contains 725,000 specimens and 10,000 species (including exotic examples from other countries). Even if the idea of creepy crawlies makes you shudder, you won’t want to miss a peek into the carefully labeled cases of jewel-like bugs and glowing butterflies. The place is also a research center, so those with a serious interest in entomology will enjoy bug-chats with the curator. The museum is open from 9 to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. daily and costs C$1
