Park of Heroes and Martyrs

Location:
León, Nicaragua

City Park

By Mike Karanicolas

Located across the street and to the north of the main cathedral, the small, modest mausoleum honors some of Leon's revolutionary fighters. Several high-ranking soldiers as well as non-military figures are buried here. While the monument is not particularly impressive, the mural surrounding it is one of the city's best, chronicling the history of Nicaragua from the Spanish conquest through the civil wars, and ending with a pair of children breaking through the barriers of the past and emerging into the bright vision of tomorrow.
