Nicaragua is famous for its volcanoes, and León is an excellent base from which to explore some of the best. Of course, Nicaragua's small size means the same volcanoes are accessible from just about anywhere, and tour operators in Granada (among other cities) offer many of the same trips. It's really a question of where you want to hang your hat at the end of the night.
Although these volcanoes don't offer lava flows like Pacaya (leave your marshmallows at home...), they're by no means inactive. If you decide to go up Volcán El Viejo, the country's most difficult, expect to be hit by periodic showers of dirt and ash from the burbling cone. Generally speaking however, the real challenge is posed by the heat and steep nature of the climb. You should be in excellent physical shape if you want to conquer El Viejo or Momotombo. Essential items to bring include sunscreen, insect repellent and lots of water.
Finally, no matter how experienced a climber you are, you shouldn't attempt to conquer any of these volcanoes without a guide. Nicaragua's park service actually requires guides for most ascents, and their local knowledge of the labyrinthine trails will come in handy should anything unexpected happen. Tierra Tours, located in Granada and León, offer the widest variety of trip options. As with most trips, it's cheaper if you book with a large group.
