One of the best ways to see Volcán Cerro Negro is by going down the volcano's side on a board. While there are other tours, the Bigfoot Hostel version starts in the late afternoon; you head out to the volcano base then climb to a viewpoint over a steaming crater. From there you continue to the top for a view over the entire volcano chain, including San Cristobal, Casita and the smoking Telca. After a look into the second crater, where you can feel hot rocks and see rising steam and sulfur deposits, you can watch the sunset then jump on a wooden board to enjoy a fun, but not scary, 600 meter (1,968 foot) ride to the bottom. The volcano is expected to explode soon, but the tour operator is keeping tabs.

You can read a personal description of the experience here.

 Cost/Getting There

Organized by Bigfoot Hostel, León; the $23 cost does not include a $4.50 national park entrance fee.
