Volcán El Viejo
This grueling four hour climb is said to be the hardest in Nicaragua, as well as the most dangerous. The volcano is extremely active, but the chief difficulty is the cone's massive size, a towering 1745 m. Expect to leave at 5:30 a.m. and be back by 4:30 p.m. Bring your own lunch, as well as long sleeves, a cap, sunscreen, repellent, and at least two liters of water. A tour costs between $40 and $55, depending on the size of your group.
