Leon is one of several cities from which tours can be booked to Volcan Momotombo (Managua is closer to the actual volcano). Tierra Tours in one of a few operators in the city that books day-trips there. Departure is at 5:30 a.m. for the two-hour drive to base camp. You should reach the top just before noon for a stunning view of Lake Momotombo and the surrounding area (including a few other active volcanoes), before heading back down to beat the scorching heat. It's Nicaragua's second hardest climb after El Viejo, with steep hills of ash and loose sand that will test your endurance.

Tierra Tours will take you up for between $40 and $60, depending on group sizes. For those who want to go at a more leisurely pace or enjoy other attractions in the area, overnight stays are also possible.
