Services in Leon

León has a bank corner (esquina de bancos) where all the major bank branches are clustered (BDF, Citi, and Banexpo, among others). The banks are usually open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and until noon on Saturdays. Most have 24-hour ATMs that accept Visa; the BAC machine accepts other major cards as well. Bancentro can cash traveler’s checks. The bank corner is a convenient cash point as well as a city landmark; you can find coyotes (licensed money changers) outside of each bank branch. Make sure you check for identification before agreeing to any transaction. Western Union (505-2-311-2426) is open from 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. weekdays and until 1:15 p.m. on Saturdays.

Internet cafés are plentiful and widespread, although some are more comfortable than others, and rates range between C$10 and C$15 per hour. Many hotels also include WiFi as part of their services. Many cyber cafés have booths in the back where you can make national (C$5 per minute) and international (C$1 per minute to the US) calls.

Correos de Nicaragua (505-2-311-2102/ 505-2-311-6655, cnleon@correosdenicaragua.com.ni) can be found 10 varas north of the Facultad de Derecho in Barrio San Felipe. Fedex León (505-2-311-2426/ 505-2-311-7203) is 50 varas east of Union Fenosa.

You can find the city’s public laundry service, Lavamatic Express (505-2-315-2396), half a block east of the Teatro Municipal. Most hostels and hotels are also able to clean your clothes for you. Ask whether they charge by the piece or the pound.

León’s main medical center, Hospital Esc. Oscar Danilo Rosales (505-2-311-0936), accepts tourists for treatment and is located in Barrio El Sagrario. There are also private medical practices sprinkled throughout the city where you can find doctors who speak English. You might also ask for a recommendation from one of León’s many pharmacies, especially if your trouble is not that serious. Farmacia La Confianza (505-2-315-1490) is right at the bus terminal.
